Bricks are made from burnt clay and it is common that the properties of these bricks may vary and can differ from one production to another. When ordering bricks for a project it is important to order all bricks at one time, where possible. If a number of loads of brick will be used, it is important to keep some pallets and mix them between loads.

When building, ensure that you work from at least three pallets at any one time.

This coupled with tip number one will ensure that patches of colour will not occur on any buildings and the facade will appear as desired.

During the building process it is important to protect bricks from varying weather.
Bricks should be stored in a location that is safe from the rain and ensures no moisture will effect them. Once laid, it is important that bricks are well covered and protected from the rain, whilst also allowing for some ventilation. Building work should be halted at temperatures close to freezing.

4.

Mortar consists of a large proportion of brickwork, 15-20%, therefore, its effect should not be overlooked. The colour of mortar used and the type of joint finish should be carefully selected before building works begin and this should be confirmed by means of a small test wall. Materials used in the mixing of the mortar should remain constant throughout the job, as this can effect the colour of the mortar.
